1.Greece’s zero-kill project

●Greece has no killings!

Greece is the one country that has a successful “Wild Dog Protection Project”!

Q. How did you make the project a success?

A.National, local and national cooperation and in-depth discussions have led to success!

How did the project come about?

1.Until the project begins!

The Wild Dog Project took place in Greece before the Athens Olympics held in 2004.

The Wild Dog Rescue Project is known as TNR, which means that dogs and cats that have been spayed or neutered will live out their lives once in a lifetime under the watchful eye of volunteer feeders and people living in the area.

Before the Olympics, Athens had a problem with wild dogs on the streets.

At one point, the idea of killing them was being considered.

However, many people said that the animals should not be excluded in order to open the Olympics, so the administration acted, and legislation was introduced to vaccinate the wild dogs, treat them for diseases, and TNR them.

Then the Greek Conference passed it and wild dog protection projects began to be launched in earnest.

2.Start the project!

First, we began a pilot TNR program with 250 wild dogs in one of the districts of the city of Athens.

Then there were tangible results and the activity gradually expanded.

And during the 2004 Olympics in Athens, we were able to run a successful wild dog protection project.

Many of the parents were placed in foster homes through this initiative, and as a result, the number of wild dogs in Athens has gone down!

Why has the Wild Dog Protection Project been so successful in Greece?

1.The involvement of veterinarians, dog trainers, and other professionals in wild dog protection projects!

Some of the wild dogs had some problematic behavior, trying to bite people.

So those wild dogs were trained by veterinarians, dog trainers, and other professionals to change them so that they could live safely with people.

To prevent wild dogs from killing themselves in the streets due to collisions with motorcycles and cars, we trained them in traffic and made sure they could live safely with humans.

2.Having an in-depth discussion with the opposition!

It is said that many Athenians have always been pro-animal conservationists, but some of them were opposed to the wild dog protection project.

As a result of our efforts to explain the importance of TNR to such opponents and the benefits of the Wild Dog Protection Project, more and more people began to understand the importance of TNR.

“We want to create a society where people can live in peace with animals.”

That’s what made the Wild Dog Rescue Project a success!

Pet-friendly Germany

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) State Veterinary Office

This is the central state administration not only in Germany, but also in the EU. In Japan, only reptiles, birds and mammals are included in the animal handling industry, but in Germany, amphibians are also included here. Furthermore, even fish and arthropods can go to the site and provide guidance and advice if they are reported.

Differences in administrative response to Japan

・If an animal handling business (including Tiaheim) violates the law (including over breeding), the permit is immediately revoked.

・Permit revocation vendor information is shared with other states

・Confiscate animals, regardless of whether they are vendors or individuals.

・The government does not have a detention facility, but asks Tiaheim to house them.

・Therefore, funding grants to Tiaheim

Same points as in Japan

・The criteria for determining abuse are not specified in the law.

・Animal Hoarder has his head in a puppy mill.

The German Federation for the Protection of Animals

It is the umbrella organization for most of Tierheim in Germany.
It is staffed by dedicated scientists in the fields of biology, veterinary medicine and law who are well versed in animal welfare issues and form the basis for animal welfare activities in Germany and Europe.

Tierheim

Surprisingly, Tierheim is said to be a “prison for animals”.
Tierheim in Germany often does not have a style of taking in any kind of animal. For example, if an owner is likely to ask to take in an animal for problematic behavior, Tierheim will try to resolve the issue without taking it back, for example, by going to teach the owner how to train the animal from Tierheim.
The Tierheim receives animals that have been taken into custody or forced by the government, animals taken from their owners, injured wild animals, etc., from both home and abroad.
The puppy mill problem is also present in Germany.
Puppy mills mean “puppy mills” in English and refer to malicious breeders who breed dogs and other pets in large numbers for profit at a low cost.
Tiaheim had good control of his animals, but his staff was left on the move.
In addition to money, staffing shortages exist as well as in Japan.
