We have interviewed people from all walks of life.
I was moved and empathized with the passion of the shelter groups to save as many lives as possible.
I could also feel the wistfulness of the administration’s need to make hard decisions to maintain social order within the rules.
After learning about what many people were doing for conservation, I have to admit that I had some negative feelings about it, but through the interviews, I found out that none of them were right, but all of them were.
Thus, I was able to learn about “saving” from various positions.
I think some people criticize what we are working on. Honestly, there are things that we ourselves could do better, but sometimes we are limited by our finances. We can’t save animals just because we love them. But we do save animals in our own way. We are working hard now to solve our problems one at a time, so that one day we can reach our goal.
We, the employees of the Hamamatsu Engagement and Education Center, work on the taxpayers’ money as our wages, so we have to work in accordance with the law. Therefore, no matter how bad the environment is, we often turn a blind eye to it as long as it is not against the regulations. It’s very hard to do anything about it when you know what you’re doing.
However, these days it is possible to deny it, and not everyone can work with animals anymore, and the size of dog cages are expanding. Also, in Hamamatsu, the number of dogs being killed has been decreasing thanks to the Hamamatsu Care and Education Center. The Hamamatsu Care and Education Center holds a handover event, and many dogs and cats are being rescued here. Thinking about what makes animals happy may be a key to reducing the number of animals killed.
Japan is one of the world’s favorite countries for the idea of pets. However, Europe has much stricter laws and has a better relationship with dogs and people. Trying to introduce European ideas to Japan will probably backfire.
But at a minimum, both people and dogs need to be educated.
If that education permeates Japan, we can take the first step in building a good relationship between dogs and people in Japan.
The harder it is to find a dog to take in, the more valuable it is (to put it plainly). The reason for this is because when we were still operating under the name “Puppy Square,” we were teaching the dogs we had in our care to live with people, and the longer they stayed, the smarter they became.
Because of our action, we are now able to have a veterinary clinic attached to the pet store. After all, if you don’t take action, nothing will happen. But in other words, if you take action, something will change.
There must be something only you can do right now.

There was an animal shelter that recently had a shelter collapse. The dogs there were left in the worst possible condition. Even if you started a shelter at the time because you wanted to save the dogs, it would be useless if the shelter collapsed. It takes a lot of determination and energy to save lives. Our goal of “saving” dogs is not to reduce the number of dogs being killed to zero, but to reduce the number of dogs in shelters to zero.
What do you think you can do to save your cats and dogs?
I think it’s important to think from a person’s point of view, not a dog’s point of view. We often hear that in order to save a dog, we should put ourselves in the dog’s shoes.
Dogs and cats are being saved thanks to the efforts of many people in various ways to “save” them.
A job where your life is in your hands is much more than that.
I hope you were able to see not just one side of the story, but many, and understand the “saving” of each side.
If we all work together, we may be able to change something that cannot be done by ourselves.
