Pet slaughters

“Slaughters” I think everyone has heard this word once.
But how is it done and how many lives are lost by humans each year?
And what is the current state of slaughter?
I think there are few people who know it correctly.

First of all, in order to know the current situation, I took a questionnaire about “image of slaughter”.

〇Image of slaughters

Painful, mustn’t be, human sins, human convenience, heartwrenching, sad, euthanasia, unreasonable, human commercial purposes, human ego, sad fear before death, being killed by human power, cruelty, ruthless, treatment to reduce the number of stray cats and dogs, disposal of stray cats and dogs when people can no longer be kept, government office can’t take care of them. economic animals, pets → some can’t be helped, poor thing → the morals of the owner, can’t be helped

The Beginning of the Pet slaughters

Why did the slaughter begin in the first place?
The reason why Japanese culling began in the past was due to a rabies epidemic in the country.
Rabies is a very dangerous infectious disease with a mortality rate of 99.9%.
It is said that rabies was introduced to Japan in the Edo period.
Then, in 1922, the Livestock Infectious Disease Prevention Act was enacted,
allowing wandering wild dogs to be killed if not reported by their owners within three days.

They have continued to be killed since then, and today they are killed because, ① they cannot feed themselves, ② they have a disease that is difficult to cure, and ③ they have personality quirks and are difficult to correct.

There are also reasons, such as the increase in the number of stray dogs and stray cats from leaving pets behind, which can destroy the ecosystem.

In fact, there have been many cases of predation of the Okinawa rail and Noguchi woodpecker, which are specially protected species in the northern part of the main island of there.

How to slaughter

There are two types of killing methods that are universal.

There are two ways to kill them: 1) mass killing using carbon dioxide and 2) euthanizing them one by one via anesthetic injection.

In the case of 1), the price is around 80 yen per pets.

In case 2), it costs a few hundred dollars.

On top of that, if you include the cost of the project, facilities, etc., the cost of just one animal is enormous.
